Smart lock for shipping containers — architecture, firmware, RF design, operations

“Secure cargo anywhere, anytime.”

Cloudtainer is a Bilbao-based company (Basque Country, Spain) building blockchain-enabled IoT locks for international cargo logistics. Their mission: give shippers and customs authorities real-time visibility into who accessed a container, when, and where — backed by an immutable blockchain audit trail.

  • Cloud-lock — IoT smart lock with real-time GPS tracking, biometric access control, and tamper detection. This is the device this documentation is about.
  • Smart Container — next-generation containers with embedded sensors for CO₂, ethanol, O₂, humidity, and temperature. Protects cargo integrity during long transit (frozen food, pharmaceuticals, wine, etc.).
  • Container Security as a Service — 24/7 monitoring platform with customs “green channel” integration, enabling faster border crossings for trusted shippers.

This site is the engineering playbook for the Cloudlock device — architecture, firmware analysis, RF/antenna design, and operational recommendations. It is maintained as a consulting deliverable alongside the hardware and firmware work.

The Cloudlock device stack:

  • Nordic nRF54L15 — application MCU with BLE (on a Seeed XIAO module)
  • Blues Notecard Cell+WiFi — cellular modem + GPS/GNSS
  • Blues Starnote — satellite backup via Skylo
  • One servo motor — lock mechanism
  • Battery pack — 11 cells + BMS

Hardware

Component architecture, schematic review, PCB design

Firmware

Zephyr RTOS, codebase analysis, low-power optimization

RF & Antennas

Faraday effect diagnostics, antenna interference, EMI shielding

Operations

Shopping list with part numbers, vendor links, budgets

Some things are still under clarification with the Cloudtainer team — e.g. exact BMS architecture, NA vs EU Notecard SKU, enclosure material. These are tracked in Open Questions so the documentation stays honest about what’s verified vs. assumed.
